OVERVIEW
Project X is a language-learning tool where you translate sequences of related sentences:
I have a key.
You have a key.
You had a key.
You had the key.
You had the key that I gave you.
I thought that you had the key that I gave you.
Initial release targets students of the Irish language, and runs on the Android platform.
FEATURES
Exercises
Various exercise types, each with its own role:
- Ladder: Focuses on one grammar rule or a few new words by drilling on a sequence of paired sentences.
- Grid: Presents larger sets of related sentences, combining material learned in several ladders.
- Integrator: Drills on sentences taken from all ladders, prioritizing material you need the most practice on.
Explanations
Each ladder exercise has a short introduction explaining what's new.
Sandbox
Explore grammar and pronunciation, or tap a word to highlight its match in the other language.
Verb Browser
View verb conjugations in various contexts, including content and relative clauses.
Help System
On-demand help guides you through the app's features.
PHILOSOPHY
These are the ideas that inspire the design of Project X:
- Focused repetition: Practice on similar sentences before mixing in broader variety.
- Time matters: Easy material should be presented less often.
- Context counts: Terms learned in isolation are soon forgotten.
- Easy first: First practice translating from, then to, the target language.
- Tick-tock: Exercises alternate between new vocabulary and new grammar.
- Baby steps: Vocabulary is best introduced in small chunks of unrelated words.
